Share Your Light: Spreading the Warmth and Joy of Chanukah
At Jewish Online School , the Share Your Light project was designed to inspire students to brighten the world by sharing the beauty of Chanukah with friends and family. Through this initiative, each student received a menorah and was encouraged to spread the light—both literally and figuratively—by gifting it to someone special and teaching them about the meaning of Chanukah.
The results were truly heartwarming, with stories pouring in of kindness, connection, and inspiration. Here are just a few highlights of how the Share Your Light project illuminated lives across the community:
The Simon Family: A New Beginning
The Simon children—Talya, Elisheva, and Yosef—felt the joy of sharing when they gave a menorah to a family friend who had never owned one before. "We were so happy to share the menorah and be part of this mitzvah," they said. The act of sharing their light not only brought a glow to their friend’s home but also strengthened bonds of friendship and faith.
Alex’s Journey of Love and Dedication
For Alex, the project became an opportunity to reach out to her family in unique circumstances. She traveled 45 minutes each way to deliver a special LED menorah to her maternal grandmother, who resides in an assisted living facility. Despite her dementia, her grandmother could still participate in the mitzvah of Chanukah lighting safely. Alex is also preparing to deliver menorahs to her mother and older sister during her upcoming visit. Her determination shows how far love and light can travel.
Isaac Isenberg: Sharing and Celebrating
Isaac Isenberg took the time to share a menorah, explain how to light it, and even played dreidel games to make the experience memorable. His actions exemplify how sharing the menorah is about more than the candles—it’s about creating joy and understanding.
Eliora Usher: A First Chanukah for Rachel and Corey
Eliora’s story is a powerful example of how one small act can change lives. She gave a menorah to Rachel, a mother who recently discovered her Jewish heritage, and her son, Corey. Their journey back to their roots began through a chance interaction with Chabad and continued with their first Chanukah celebration. Eliora’s excitement to share her menorah with Rachel and Corey demonstrates the ripple effect of kindness.
Yisroel Goldstein: Sharing Light in Unexpected Places
Yisroel Goldstein brought light to Des Moines, Iowa, where he shared his menorah with a fellow Jew. His act of generosity highlights the far-reaching impact of this project, as menorahs traveled far and wide, connecting Jewish communities across the country.
The Ripple Effect of Light
The Share Your Light project is more than a program—it’s a movement. It has shown us how the simple act of sharing a menorah can ignite joy, foster connections, and brighten the world around us.
Here’s to continuing to share our light and joy of Judaism, not just during Chanukah, but all year long.
